PCB Micro Drilling: Why Sub-Micron Carbide Matters for HDI Boards

How sub-micron WC grain carbide, flute geometry, and runout control determine hole quality and drill life in PCB and IC-substrate micro drilling.

Micro holes, zero margin for error

High-density interconnect (HDI) boards routinely require holes below 0.3 mm, and IC substrates push diameters toward 0.1 mm. At these scales the drill is a cantilevered carbide micro-structure: grain size, edge preparation, and stiffness decide whether the hole is round, positional, and burr-free.

Why sub-micron carbide

Fine and ultrafine WC grades keep the cutting edge defined as diameters shrink. Coarser grains leave a proportionally rougher edge that degrades quickly; sub-micron carbide holds edge acuity, which shows up directly as lower drilling thrust, less burr formation, and more consistent hole-wall quality across the drill life.

  • Higher edge strength at small diameters resists corner chipping
  • Lower thrust force reduces stack deformation and exit burrs
  • Consistent wear means hole quality holds across the hit count

Laminate families and drill behavior

FR-4 and high-Tg laminates are forgiving; PTFE and ceramic-filled systems are abrasive and demand wear-resistant grades; metal-core and copper-inlay stacks impose shock on entry and exit. Drill diameter, laminate stack, and hit-count target should be specified together, since they jointly set the right grade and flute design.

Incoming quality that matters

Beyond geometry checks, serious PCB drill programs verify runout-related parameters and consistency across the lot — a drill that varies within its own box forces machine-side compensation. Aligning the inspection scope (diameter, concentricity, edge condition sampling) at the RFQ stage keeps incoming quality predictable.

Summary

For HDI and IC-substrate drilling, sub-micron carbide plus controlled geometry is the combination that protects hole quality at high hit counts. Specify laminate, stack, and target hits with the drill RFQ.
